The Miriam & Moses Center for Pluralistic Adult Jewish Learning presents:
Tuesday Night Symposium Fall Semester
The History of Antisemitism
Guest Instructor Dr. Benjamin Gampel discussing Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Medieval Iberia: How Golden Was It?
The Jews of medieval Iberia—today’s Spain and Portugal—have captured the imagination of American Jews and have been a subject of much speculation in Western culture. The notion that these Jews fashioned a civilization within a multicultural pluralistic environment, that they were at home and creative in their Judaism, even as they mixed freely both politically and culturally in Christian and Muslim society, is indeed an attractive proposition in contemporary society. It’s a lovely idea, even as another aspect of their history draws our attention: their decline and expulsion. We are mesmerized by the fall of these Jews from grace. Onto their fate, we graft our present concerns. Can Jews who mix freely and are successful in a pluralistic society, also suffer a reversal of fortune that leads to banishment and exile?
Registration is required.
The semester costs $50 for members and $100 for not-yet members.
