Sisterhood: Be Empowered. Be Enriched. Be Engaged.
Join the women of Temple Beth-El to participate in social activities, educational programs, tzedakah initiatives, and social-action projects.
Originally called the Jewish Sisterhood of Great Neck, Sisterhood of Temple Beth-El of Great Neck was organized in 1927 – a year before the founding of Temple Beth-El itself – to provide a Jewish education to children. Sisterhood continues to play an important role in our congregation.
The group sponsors Rosh Chodesh programs, a Sukkot event, Girls’ Night Out Dinners and hosts regular book discussions. Through these programs and other social activities, Sisterhood strives to meet the needs of all women in our congregation. The members embrace the name, because Sisterhood speaks to the sense of family and mutual care they seek to create. Through volunteering and working side-by-side, they build bonds of connection to each other and to the synagogue. Even during the difficult pandemic times, the group has met online in order to keep its members connected to the synagogue – and to each other. To support our community during COVID, volunteer bakers donated nearly a thousand desserts for health care workers and local families in need. Their contributions were highlighted in these newspaper articles: Temple Beth-El Sisterhood Delivers Some Sweetness to Hospital Staff and Community Unity Feeds Families in Need.
Signs of Sisterhood’s activities and charitable donations can be found everywhere at Temple Beth-El. Our fundraising efforts are ongoing, and the proceeds are donated to tzedakah – with the beneficiaries voted on by our membership. Sisterhood also offers financial assistance to congregants in need and those with special needs through the Emergency Relief Fund and the Helen Zaner Special Needs Fund. Donations to Sisterhood’s funds are greatly appreciated.
We encourage all women members to attend a Sisterhood event. Be Empowered. Be Enriched. Be Engaged. There is a place for you in Sisterhood of Temple Beth-El. To learn more, email Sisterhood at .
