Guest Scholar: Alyssa Gray, J.D. Ph.D.

This class will focus on three aspects of the Babylonian Talmud’s engagement with the land of Israel: (1) how it portrays the past, present, and future of the geographical land; (2) its portrayal of relationships between Babylonian rabbis and those of the land of Israel; and (3) a couple of key theological and halakhic differences between the two rabbinic centers.

Alyssa Gray is the Emily S. and Rabbi Bernard H. Mehlman Chair in Rabbinics, and Professor of Codes and Responsa Literature at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City.
