Join the Explorers for an inspiring afternoon exploring two exhibits at the Dr. Bernard Heller Museum at Hebrew Union College, located at 1 West 4th Street, NYC, 10012.

 A Joyful Noise!
In A Joyful Noise! photographer Lloyd Wolf presents his documentation of the international Jewish klezmer music scene from the early 1990s through 2024. From old-school performers to the latest young cutting-edge bands, these photographs provide a visual journey exploring this vibrant musical tradition.

What is klezmer? The word derives from a Hebrew phrase keley zemer, meaning tools of the music—or instruments, but by the early 1700’s it was being used to refer to the musicians. Their music, based on Middle Eastern scales, thrived in Eastern Europe, and was performed on happy occasions, using stringed instruments, hammer dulcimers, clarinets, drums, and, later, on other easily portable instruments.

Mothers, Prophets, Warriors: Women of the Bible
The Hebrew Bible is primarily a set of texts chronicling the roles of God and man in the beginnings of the world and the Israelite people. The main mortal players in this history are men, good and bad, strong and weak. But every so often a female name pops out of the narrative with an important function.

This exhibition looks at these women in art works by 24 artists from the 17th through the 21st centuries, primarily from the Heller Museum collection. All of these works remind us of the importance of women’s agency, courage, and wisdom to our heritage.
